Steinway Pianos
Long Island City, New York

The
American company Steinway and Sons was founded by an immigrant Heinrich
Englehard Steinweg (later Henry Steinway) in
1853 in New York City. The Company sold its first piano for $500.
Originally they produced one piano a week. By 1860, the company
employed 350 men and was producing 30 pianos per week.In 1870 Steinway
built its own company town in Queens, New York. Steinway Village had
its own post office, church and employee housing. The company also
opened an amusement park and beer garden for recreation. Unfortunately
it did not survive prohibition.
Steinway was awarded gold medals at the 1867 Paris Exhibition for
excellence in manufacturing and engineering. A second manufacturing
facility was opened in Hamburg, Germany.
Improbably, Henry Steinway was 53 when he immigrated with his family to
America.
